Andy’s Last Bali Trip

In 2011 the surfing world lost Andy Irons, a three-time World Champion and a living legend. He was a frequent Bali visitor and over the years formed a close bond with the surfers and community living here.

He met Wayan “Betet” Merta as a 17-year-old Junior in Australia. He surfed with Made Adi Putra “Bol” in Fiji. He even spent a night in Marlon Gerber’s mosquito-infested Kuta bungalow with his wife Lyndie when Un’s Hotel was fully booked. Local filmer Ivan Tanjung worked with Andy on countless occasions in Bali, the Mentawai’s, Nias, Lombok, Sumbawa, Mexico, Hawaii, and France.

The following photos are from his last trip to Bali in July 2010. He was in town shooting  Billabong boardshort ads and a video clip for their ‘I surf because..’ campaign, which is embedded down below. After this trip, he jetted off to compete in the European leg of the World Tour, followed by the Puerto Rico WCT, then onto America where he sadly passed away shortly after.
